Publishing or Editorial Assistants form the backbone of the book publishing industry. They work with senior colleagues, helping to prepare books for publication by doing all routine but essential tasks.

They mainly assist with the commissioning, planning and production of forthcoming publications. They also assist with related administrative tasks.

Their regular day to day activities include:

 Gathering copy from fax machines.
 Checking emails for submitted copy.
 Working with editors, designers and writers.

 Meeting and greeting visitors to editorial departments.
 Assessing manuscripts.

 Organising and attending meetings.

Would be Publishing Assistants need to have excellent keyboard skills, accuracy, good standards of grammar, punctuation and spelling. The ability to generate copy as quickly and error free as possible is important. There will always be deadlines to meet, especially on busy publication schedules.

The basic starting salary for a new Editorial Assistant is around £11000 per year. Most Editorial Assistants work standard Monday to Friday office hours.

No formal qualifications are needed to become a Publishing Assistant, apart from achieving good grades in GCSE English and maths. BTEC type qualifications in office practice and administration are also helpful.

Essential personal qualities for Publishing Assistants include a good standard of written and verbal communication skills, smart and presentable appearance, and a polite, professional and patient manner.

Working in-house as a Publishing Assistant is an ideal way for anyone wanting to work in publishing to get grounding and good experience in the day to day operations of the industry. With sufficient experience, Publishing Assistants will be ideally placed to take advantage opportunities to progress within the industry.

Most employers recruit from within and usually offer on the job training. Vacancies can also be advertised externally on company websites, trade journals, magazines, newspapers and job centres.
