Working as a dental nurseCategory: Business Article posted by: Jon Richards
Although there may be a majority of people who do not like going to the dentist, there are some people who do enjoy it and like to be part of the dental surgery and choose it as a career. There are a number of dental surgeries opened throughout the UK offering dental services to people of all ages and it also provides a number of different job opportunities for people who would like to work within this sector.
With so much great choices of sweets and sugary foods being sold on the market, unfortunately the visits to the dentists are much higher than before. To assist with this increase in demand, there is a need for more dental nurses to aid the dentists during each appointment. Some of the dental tasks and responsibilities would require the need of more than one person; therefore dental nurses are of great beneficial to these dental surgeries.
The role of a dental nurse is mainly to assist the dentist with all the necessary clinical duties within the surgery and as and when required. As the number of patients increase, it is important that dental nurses are able to prepare the instruments and equipment ready that are required by the dentist to save time and be able to see more patients during the course of the day.
The dental nurse may also be required to mix certain materials together for the dentist and ensuring the patient is comfortable during their visit. The simple dental procedures can also be performed by the dental nurse therefore freeing up time for the dentist to do other things as well. The dental nurse will be required to sterilise all the instruments used and keep the surgery as clean as possible. Personal hygiene is also important because they work quite closely with patients. If the patient is back on a routine appointment, it is important that the dental nurse provides all previous records of the problems as well as what the check up will be for.
The dental nurse may also be involved with writing and taking notes given by the dentist during the patient check up or appointment. The dental nurse would need to transfer these notes on the computer system as recording data onto the computer system is also the duty of the dental nurse, as well as filing and storing records. Due to the type of environment the role is in, any equipment and wastes would need to be disposed of carefully and correctly.
As it is mostly the dental nurse which provides the dentist with the stock and materials, it is important that the dental nurse can keep a note of the stock and order them whenever it is low so that it will always be available for use when it is required.
In some practices it may be necessary for the dental nurse to take over some of the reception duties therefore having experience within this sector would also benefit. The type of reception work that the dental nurse may be involved in would be taking payments from the patients, booking and making the appointments, dealing with the paperwork as well as meeting patients.
Dental nurses may be required in a number of different establishments and are employed by private and public hospitals as well. Some dental nurses will be trained within the armed forces as well as other dental practices private and publicly funded too.
There are no specific qualifications required to train as a student or dental nurse; but it is important however that the individual is willing to take on further training. There are training courses available within colleges and universities that people can easily apply to. Employers will look for candidates who have an eagerness to learn and a willingness to study, they must be friendly and approachable because they will be speaking and working closely with dentists and patients on a daily basis.
Although training to become a dental nurse does not necessary require previous experience or skills; to become one however; the candidate will need to have previous nursing experience and experience of working within a surgery. They will need to be willing to train and develop, have good customer service skills and good IT skills. A considerable amount of team work is also involved; therefore team working skills would be beneficial to the role.
Overall, working within this sector can provide the individual with new knowledge and working practices, he or she will be able to work closely with others and help the organisation work more effectively and efficiently.
