Warehouses – The ExperienceCategory: Business Article posted by: Jon Richards
Like all jobs of physical labour there are times when you are focussed on the task in front of you, intent in mind and body and completing the endeavour, whatever that may be, and there are times when the group mentality is at the forefront and team work is needed, and therefore the ability to work in a team is extremely important.
No amount of life experience or formal education can prepare you for the time when you have to physically depend on another; involvement in sport rarely comes close to it. When you look down on an application form and you find the space where you can fit the generic and ultimately idiotic phrase, ‘works well as part of a team’ â€" probably the most overused set of words in the English language â€" it is fair to say that if working in a warehouse is new to you, then the phrase you just wrote down will be left meaningless.
This is one of the reasons why many would automatically think that work such as this is for the unqualified, and, it is true, it is difficult to get letters placed after your name if you want to a career spent in a storage space, but also, the skills needed to be good at your job far surpass being able to lift and put down without straining a muscle or shattering the luggage.
The warehouse is a peculiar environment in which to work, such are the nooks and crannies, the hiding places, the danger and, also, the endless possibilities to renege on ones work ethic. This is one of the reasons why to work in such a place is not about training and education, it is not about those letters after the name, but it is about character. Of course, that is not to suggest nobility or romance to a job that is hard work and often limited in reward, but it is a job that it is important to be qualified for, and impossible to present those qualifications on spec to the potential employer.
