Voice recognition software: does your computer understand what you're trying to say?Category: Computer & Technology Article added by: Manuel Müllers
When thinking of voice recognition software, many people think of those Startrek-like computers that are able to understand what one is telling them without any difficulties. Many people don't even know that a computer can understand their voice. And among those that heard of this feature, there are many that underestimate the difficulties that are connected with recognizing the computer user's voice. One thing is clear. Computer can nowadays already much more than just typing a dictated text. The possibilities are manifold. For example, voice recognition makes the computer accessible for disabled people. Nowadays, one can even think about using voice recognition and text speech system in combination to allow sightless people using the computer to enrich their every-day life. In addition, voice recognition gives the computer a human touch that helps people to get used to it more quickly. Many mobile phones and car navigation systems can already be used completely by voice commands.
Among the voice recognition systems, there are many kinds of recognition engines that allow the computer to understand what the user is saying. The first one is the so-called speaker independent voice recognition. It can be used by whatever user without having to be adapted to the subtleties of the user's speech. The disadvantages of this kind of software are that its vocabulary is in many cases limited to a few hundred words. The speaker dependent voice recognition works just the other way around. The software needs to be adapted to the user's voice before being able to be used. But once it is in use, it easily recognizes many thousand words.
In the coming years, new programs will be launched that will be able to understand the human voice without any training. That is for sure. However, it is difficult to say when these programs will be available.
