Few people know a good beach when they see one quite like the Spanish. Which is why when you see a surge of Spaniards people going on viajes Tunez (as they call Tunisia trips), you know there’s going to be some brilliant beaches somewhere along the line.

And you would, of course, be bang on the money. Tunisia beaches are, without a doubt, amongst the very best on the Mediterranean (and within easy reach of Western European holidaymakers). Throw in some balmy year-round temperatures, and it’s obvious that you’ve got a dream holiday destination.

The Tunisian coastline is lined by 810 km of dazzling white sand, so picking out the best spots to roll out the beach towel is no easy task. Regardless, here’s a pick of some of the areas that contain the very best beaches in Tunisia.

Hammamet

There’s no two ways about it, with its soft white sands and clean blue waters, Hammamet Beach is sensational. And while the public areas can get a bit crowded, the hotel beaches at Hammamet are remarkably sparsely populated with other beach-goers, making it easy to see why they’re amongst the most popular beaches in Tunisia.

Sousse

To the south of Hammamet, Sousse is another resort for the serious beach-goer. Indeed, like Hammamet, its beach is a luxurious curve of snowy white sand that seems to stretch away forever into the distance. Just outside Sousse, meanwhile, Chott Meriam is a less well-known alternative to the main beach.

Djerba

Further south again, and marooned just off the mainland, the island of Djerba has some of the most beautiful, unspoilt of Tunisia beaches. On the northeast of the island, the hotel beaches (particularly those around Houmt Souk) are consistently excellent.

The island was believed to be the mythical home of the Lotus Eaters in Homer’s Odyssey, and certainly, having seen beaches like those stretching between el Kantara and Aghir, it’s easy to imagine how easy it would be to slip into a life of idle hedonism!

Tabarka

Way up in the north of the country, the beaches surrounding Tabarka are different again. Unlike the stark, almost desert-like, sandy landscapes of the south, there are rocky cliffs and quiet sandy coves. The area is also the best place for diving in Tunisia, and the coral that lies just off the coast is some of the most plentiful in the Mediterranean.

And finally…

Two other beaches that deserve a special mention are El Hawaria and Manzil Tmim. Both are almost always quiet, clean and drop dead gorgeous. Both are also practically unvisited by sun-seeking holidaymakers on a Tunisia trip. Which just goes to show, that wherever you go in Tunisia, you’re never likely to be far from an idyllic beach to stretch out on.
