The world is a big place. And for the traveler it’s full of new parts to explore, and new wonders to uncover. But travel’s not just about continually finding new places; it’s about finding new things to do, and new ways to reinvigorate old favorites.

Like returning to a book many years after you first read it, you can relive what you felt the first time, and consider the way you’ve changed since then. That way you learn about the world, your perception of it, and your place within it.

Below are three ideas for three familiar, time-honored destinations – Venice, Buenos Aires and Tenerife – that are just a bit different. If you’ve already been to them, then they’re sure to benefit from a slightly new twist; if you haven’t, then you’re sure to benefit from them all the more!

Pick Up Italian in Venice

Venice is like a fabulous, but familiar, work of art. Its beauty, though very real, can lose just a little of its luster from over-exposure. The more you see of it, the more accustomed you become to its wonders, and the more you begin to take them for granted.

Which is why it’s a good idea to spice up a trip to Venice a bit by doing an Italian course. You still book a hotel in Venice, and you can still do a fair bit of sightseeing, but this slightly longer stay, and the greater sense of immersion in the city that comes from it, makes the appreciation of it all the more intense. As you walk out of the classroom, you almost have to pinch yourself as you think: "Am I really learning Italian in Venice?”

Enjoy the Opera Season in Buenos Aires

Buenos Aires is a fabulous place. An engaging mix of faded colonial grandeur and brash new modern districts; ragingly hip modern nightlife and the seductive rhythms of the tango; carnivores delight in its reassuringly uncomplicated steakhouses, while vegetarians and gourmets rave at the new wave of sophisticated international cuisine that’s creeping in.

But one thing that many travelers in Buenos Aires do not do is come for the opera. The fabulous Teatro Colon in back in business after being closed for refurbishments, and the program is as varied and inviting as ever. With prices still low (compared to the US and Europe) real opera aficionados have for years now been renting Buenos Aires apartments and taking in as much of the season as possible.

Learn to Dive in Tenerife

Tenerife’s known for many things – its fabulous weather, miles of beaches and top-class hotels – but not perhaps for its diving. Which is strange, really, because the diving in Tenerife is excellent – particularly if you’re just starting out.

Down to the south of the island, Los Chuchos is an especially popular dive site for beginners (with many of the dive schools taking boats out there; not far from Playa de las Americas, meanwhile, La Caleta has an amazing range of sea life on display. Really, though, when it comes to diving in Tenerife, it’s hard to beat the amazing Las Cuevitas – a series of caves in the cliffs of Los Gigantes.
