Three Great Options for Your SabbaticalCategory: Travel & Holidays Article added by: Paul Collins
We all know that the working world can get a little tiresome from time to time. Who, after all, hasn’t returned from a holiday dreaming of packing the whole thing in and going off on a lengthy sabbatical?
But it doesn’t have to be a dream, and it doesn’t have to be a self-indulgent exercise, either. Employers are increasingly amenable to the idea of their staff taking a couple of months out – particularly if they’re going to come back a fresher and more rounded person.
Here, then, are three options to really make the most of your sabbatical:
1. Do a German course in Berlin
What employer wouldn’t approve of one of their staff members going off and learning another language under their own steam? And it’s really hard to think of a better place to do so than the vibrant German capital of Berlin.
A couple of months spent doing a German course in Berlin isn’t just going to mean you come away speaking another language, it will also have given you the opportunity to live in one of the hippest cities in the world right now.
2. Do a Stint of Volunteering in Costa Rica
Volunteering is another classic sabbatical option that gives you the opportunity to make a difference while at same time learning about another culture. It doesn’t take long to see why there are so many volunteers overseas in Costa Rica: the country is poor, yes, and there’s plenty to do to help – from improving its agricultural infrastructure to teaching English, or contributing to any number of vital ecological schemes. But it’s also an absolutely stunning country full of friendly people, that’s a real privilege to spend some time in.
3. Cultural Tourism in Italy
Few places in the world offer as much opportunity for self-enrichment as Italy. And a couple of months spent exploring the artistic and historical treasures of Rome, Florence, Venice and Milan (not to mention a host of lesser towns and cities!) is one long journey of intellectual advancement.
If even that seems a little unproductive, then there’s always the opportunity to do a little viaggi studio (as they call doing a bit of studying on your travels in Italian!) Mixing up a bit of traveling in Italy with a period spent learning the language is the stuff of which great sabbaticals are made of.
