Not many places can match Tenerife when it comes to picking a place to take the kids away on holiday. But the first thing to get right for a family-friendly trip to Tenerife is choosing the right hotel. It goes without saying that there are plenty of Tenerife hotels to choose from, but, as a general rule, the southwest of the island tends to be most popular with holidaymaking families.

The Iberostar Bouganville Playa in Adeje, though, regularly wins rave reviews from Spanish families on their viajes Tenerife (or Tenerife trips) for the range of activities and two excellent swimming pools. Top of its family-friendly credentials, though, is its varied buffet which has plenty to offer both fussy children and parents.

Children’s Attractions

Just outside Santa Cruz is one of Tenerife’s foremost child-friendly attractions: Loro Parque. Although it’s named after its prestigious parrots (‘Loro Parque’ means ‘Parrot Park’ in Spanish), it’s actually a zoo with countless other fantastic species. Dolphin and sea lion shows, an aquarium – complete with sharks – and a reproduction of Arctic conditions in the penguin enclosure, all come together to create a great day out for all the family.

Over in Adeje, meanwhile, the attractions just keep coming: Held to be the largest water park in the whole of Europe, Siam Park opened in 2008 amidst much excitement from families who regularly holiday in Tenerife. All in all, there are some 14 different attractions on the site, while there are also a wide range of places to eat, offering a refuge for parents should the slides get a little too much!

Few children wouldn’t be won over by a cable car trip, and in the trip up to the top of Mount Teide, Tenerife has a real cracker. At 3700 meters, Mount Teide is Spain’s highest mountain, and the views from the top are absolutely sensational. For much of the year there’s also a fair bit of snow at the top, so kids can be baffled and entertained in equal measure by a snowball fight on their ‘summer’ holiday!

Child-friendly Beaches in Tenerife

Obviously Tenerife’s got its fair share of beaches, and the vast majority of them are, for the most part, child-friendly. The popular El Medano is probably best avoided, as the high winds that make it a great wind-surfing and kite-surfing beach, also make it unsuitable for families. Over in Santa Cruz, the beaches of Playa de Jardin and Playa de las Teresitas, and, of course, the famous Playa de las Americas (to the south) are all excellent choices for a family day at the seaside,

Things to watch out for

Ultimately, there’s very little that can be said against choosing Tenerife as a family holiday destination. One thing to be wary of is that in the summer temperatures regularly get up into the mid-thirties, so it’s important to choose a hotel with a covered pool area and a games room (see above) so that children can escape the worst of the midday sun.

And that is really about that: when it comes to child-friendly destinations, Tenerife is right out there in a league of its own.
