1. Learn a bit of Spanish
While in the hotels staff will, for the most part, speak perfect English, if you want to find out anything about the ‘real Dominican Republic’, it’s a good idea to try to learn a little Spanish. That way, you’re sure to really get the most out of your viajes Caribe (that’s ‘Caribbean trips’ in Spanish!)

2. Decide on a dream Dominican Republic hotel
Hotels in the Dominican Republic are like a shining jewel of the Caribbean tourist industry, and it’s really hard to single any one out. Having said that, the Bluebay Getaway Villas Doradas in Puerto Plata’s Playa Dorada is a real winner. Particularly popular with honeymooners, it’s immaculately clean and well-run, the food in all of its three restaurants is excellent, and it all comes in at decidedly good value for money.

3. Bask on a beach
When it comes to idyllic Caribbean beaches, the Dominican Republic is right up there with the very best. Beaches in the Dominican Republic are famous for their clean, white sand. Those at Bayahibe, La Romana and Punta Cana are all sensational (and conveniently close to some of the best hotels in the Dominican Republic) while Sosua is a little less developed and visited by tourists.

4. Explore the amazing underwater world
It should come as no surprise to anyone that diving in the Dominican Republic is outstanding. The waters that surround the island are chock-full of a plethora of wonderful flora and fauna, and Dominican Republic dive sites of note, include: Cabrera, Punta Rucia and La Caleta.

5. Shop till you drop on Calle Conde
In the heart of Santo Domingo’s old colonial quarter, Calle Conde is a great place to go shopping in the Dominican Republic. Along with actual shops there are a number of market stalls to browse through (and haggle with), and the whole area has an agreeably lively atmosphere.

6. Eat endless amounts of fresh seafood
The Dominican Republic still has a thriving fishing industry, and whether it’s the poshest luxury hotel or the scruffiest of little shacks on the beach, there’s an almost inexhaustible supply of fresh fish. Then wash it down with one (or all) of the ‘three bs’ – Barcelo, Brugal and Bermudez – the locally produced rum!

7. Choose the right time of year to go
Although it’s never exactly a bad time to head off to the Dominican Republic, June to October can be a little bit on the stormy side, while November to February are peak times. Having said that, there’s nothing quite like having a romantic dinner on the balcony of your hotel room while a thunder storm rages away out at sea, to really cap off an idyllic Caribbean trip!
