A good career path for someone interested in science, but also interested in helping and mentoring others, is that of a science teacher. For those who have an interest in science, but do not wish to partake in research and spend all of their time in a laboratory, a career in science education can be very rewarding.

Individuals may choose to study science at the undergraduate level, and then complete a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) which qualifies them to work in secondary schools around the UK. Studying in this way allows a person to closely study science, their main interest, and integrate it with teaching, allowing for in-depth knowledge to pass on to their students.

Common science subjects taught in secondary schools are biology, physics, and chemistry. Some of the lower year levels may have more than one science subject combined into one class.

Another option is to become a university lecturer in a science subject. Working as a lecturer in a university requires a person to have completed a PhD in their area of expertise. Therefore, many years of studying lie ahead for a future university lecturer. Lecturers need to be highly educated in order to be able to pass on the appropriate level of knowledge to university students. Lecturers can choose to specialise in pretty much any of the many areas of science there are to choose from, and may continue to carry out their research while teaching at university.

Aside from teaching practical laboratory classes, lecturers also have to perform lectures on their subjects (hence their job title) so it is advisable for someone who would like to become a lecturer to be good at public speaking. Sometimes hundreds of students attend a lecture, so fear of talking in front of crowds is not an option. Lecturers also may take small tutorial classes with students to practice the theory of science and help them understand the ins and outs of their specialisation.

Teaching science at any level is an interesting and varied career option, as it allows a person to work directly with science, while also passing knowledge onto others. Instead of being stuck in the same laboratory every day, there is the opportunity to work in a classroom, an office, and sometimes in the outdoors.
