Reporting Identity TheftCategory: Finance Article added by: Joe Farinaccio
After contacting the 3 big credit reporting agencies and informing them of identity fraud a victim needs to begin the process of clearing up any fraudulent records generated by the identity thief. This usually involves obtaining a police report.
Contact the police in your hometown. Ask if there is an officer assigned to a "white collar crime or economic fraud unit.” If one exists, then ask to speak with that officer or investigator. If not, then ask whom you should speak to in order to fill out a report that documents the crime of identity theft.
If your local police resist the idea of filling out an official police report then politely insist. One reason the police may resist filling out a report is because they think you expect them to exert a lot of time and effort investigating the crime. That, of course, is unlikely to happen.
Explain to the officer or detective that you must have a police report for "informational purposes” so you can clear your credit profile and legally protect yourself against the identity thief committing crimes in your name. You can also explain the CRAs and credit grantors often expect a police report to clear a credit profile tainted by identity theft. In addition, prospective employers and future credit issuers need to understand that you’re the victim of a genuine crime.
These are the basic reasons why a police report is needed. And you should be able to find a police official who sympathizes with your dilemma. Let the police know that it’s going to be very difficult for you to clear your name, credit and financial records if you don’t have a police report.
If this fails to generate a results then call or visit the website of the office for your state’s Attorney General. Find out if there is law for your state that requires police to write up a report for identity theft victims upon request.
