Recruitment – Theatre Front of HouseCategory: Business Article posted by: Jon Richards
It is always a refreshing feeling when going to the theatre, a pastime that has carried with it for so long a staid and fusty reputation (although quite unwarranted), to be greeted by such young and enthusiastic front of house representatives. The Bristol Old Vic is one such experience.
Front of House work, just like ushering in a cinema, or leading people to the aisles with the nails in a hardware store, is undervalued most by the people that place these people there to help you in the first place; the employer, and is often greatly valued by the person being helped. The wage is an overall ugly representation of what civil progress is meant to define, and the work is often lengthy, hard and, as I just hinted at, poorly recompensed. So how is it that such young, gifted, and enthusiastic individuals can be enticed into the workplace? Is it down to a recession? Is it down to a maverick recruitment campaign that has wowed unsuspecting youngsters away from the tills at Tesco and into the theatre foyers of the United Kingdom? No, it is none of these and yet a little bit of both; these young workers are, in fact, actors and the recession (a time when all art funding suffers, even if the art itself is invigorated) plays a small part, as does a maverick (by some definitions) recruitment drive.
The pull for young aspiring actors toward this line of work is that theatre work is theatre work and the nature of it is very much by the by when it comes to the alternative which is manning a till at Tesco. The name of the theatre will stand out on a CV brighter than the tasks carried out, and there are a number of successful actors who have started out this way, making contacts, getting a feel for the theatre, just being there and soaking up what the great auditoriums have to offer. As far as recruiting the workforce in this sector goes, the process could not be easier.
