Recruitment - Bar Staff

Traditionally the turnover of the workforce for bar jobs has been high and often, with few people using it as a career below management level, and it is often an occupation used to supplement income or, very commonly, to provide extra income during student days.

There are several reasons for this (what is tempting to term) phenomenon. The wage is very low for the shift patterns, and the work is often perceived as work that a monkey could carry out with minimum training. Recruitment of bar staff rarely takes on a ‘first week’ drive, and rarely follows the normal procedures that other workforces would be subjected to for similarly paid jobs. Interviews are often informal, and it is in this industry more than any other, employers would say, that the personal reference counts high above any other qualification.

For what counts above all else, and something that the endless red tape and scrutiny of the more accepted recruitment techniques can never truly ascertain with any authority, is personality. Job experience counts for little, regardless of what might be said in official circles, and qualifications count for nothing, the job at hand is about personality, suitability and character.

Recruitment agencies have yet to develop tests that define a person’s suitability within the realms of these parameters, for all the good their typing scenarios might do. But, it is difficult to always find the right person, as often, the personality of the establishment needs to be matched, also. The perception of the ease of bar work is something that should be addressed by both recruitment services and those who are seeking the staff, and also, the wages should be reflective of the work put in, but overall, with everything considered, the recruitment of bar staff should signal the intent of the service that is to be provided, and a conscientious and responsible worker will create an atmosphere of that type, and an environment that is conducive to a relaxed and rounded leisurely experience.
