Even though job specifications vary according to the type of job, construction and building directors should have an extensive knowledge of construction tasks, procedures and operations. Most countries require them to be qualified with licences, but this depends on the company that does the recruitment.

Regarding expertise and practice, most firms expect a graduate certificate or similar qualifications, even for experienced construction workers. The specific courses that will enable entrance into the construction field are those related to mathematics, construction development or build planning. Almost all educational institutions provide courses related to construction, whether in supervisory preparation, production or technological aspects. An increased number of construction supervisors are being recruited based on their diplomas which can compensate for the experience.

The preparation program differs according to the type of company that hired them. Typically, construction supervisors are being prepared while performing their tasks, but functions and theoretical procedures must be learned individually. They could also obtain valuable information from experienced supervisors, like supervisory methods, rules, specifications, orders, document requests, recording tasks and assigning duties to employees.

Since supervisors must have the precise combination of technical expertise, practical experience and physical skills, recruiters select candidates who have received conventional preparation and experience. For instance, many supervisors have worked as mechanical engineers or technicians. The skills acquired in previous jobs could prove to be beneficial for entering into a similar field. Other qualifications include the need for construction supervisors to be healthy, in an excellent physical condition because this job is active and requires constant movement from different construction sites to others, including climbing on buildings and other difficult tasks.

A construction director must have particular skills. By obtaining these professional qualities, the employee could find his job easier to be performed or tasks more accessible to finalize. The primary role revolves around multitasking. Those who are skilled in performing multiple duties, have the tendency to outshine in this profession. Another reason for multitasking involves the various aspects of construction trades. Construction directors should have exceptional problem solving skills because construction is a sector where difficulties could appear when performing even the simplest of tasks, thus the construction director is the professional who is required to solve those difficulties in most situations. Considering their experience, directors should be able to perform their duties successfully without any problems. Nevertheless, candidates with a strong experience in problem-solving tasks will find this profession more accessible and responsibilities easier to be accomplished.

As for timetables, appointments, meetings and other time-related aspects, the construction director should be punctual. Since projects are designed to be finalized over a specific period of time, construction operations must be performed as to settle the project as appointed. When construction workers/supervisors/directors are aware of these particularities, then their job becomes more worthwhile and rewarding and they reap success in the long term.
