It would not be wholly inaccurate to suggest that the position of Office Junior is not a little old fashioned, and has been usurped somewhat by the office temp. The Office Temp is quite a different creature to the Junior, however, but one who often takes up the same responsibilities and swallows up the future prospects.
The Junior, firstly, would be someone with no qualifications, straight out of school, with hand-me-down shirt and tie and shoes polished by mum, ready to make tea all day long before eventually being shown how the photocopier works. After several decades of making tea and generally being the office monkey the Office Junior would no doubt find an opportunity for self improvement, maybe a position at reception would open up and could be easily filled by someone who, more than anyone, would get to know more people around the entire company than just those in his or her specific department. From there the sky would be the limit with maybe someday getting an admin position back behind the walls, in the bunker, and, with fingers tightly crossed, someone with no qualifications has risen to a position through hard-work and through the people around him or her gaining a good appreciation of the person they work with and their abilities.
The Office temp is quite different, often a student or someone between jobs, often very well qualified, but often not for the job that the company specializes in, and often this temp will be given after several months an opportunity to fulfil a role that is so far removed from the dreams and ambitions of the temp, but pays the bills and affords a few drinks on the weekend that it might as well be taken up for the time being and thus creates a smouldering thirty-something mass of resentment sat at a desk they hate in a job they despise. Of course, this is a slightly comic representation of the truth, but the days of the Office Junior rising through the ranks, it would appear, are disappearing fast.
