A Guide to London for the Solo Woman Traveler
Solo travel has become an increasingly popular option for women over recent years. And the vast, sprawling metropolis of London with its fantastic museums and galleries, its collection of big-name sights and its unbeatable shopping, is one of the best cites in the world for solo women travelers.
Finding your Feet
Its infrastructure and sheer size is often daunting, but in actual fact navigating from your London hostel and the city’s various attractions is made easier by a world-class travel infrastructure.
Although traveling in close quarters with other people is sometimes unavoidable at rush hour, there are few places inaccessible by either tube, train or the famed London bus. There will always be a service of some kind running any time of the day or night, too.
It is a densely populated city and attractions are often crowded in high-season, but many can be booked in advance and often offer a queue-jump service for a nominal fee. However, one bonus of its dense population is the often close proximity of landmarks such as Tower Bridge, the London Eye, the London Aquarium and the IMAX along the Thames, or, out to the west, the Natural History Museum, the Science Museum and the V&A in South Kensington.
In terms of safety, most tourist areas are exceptionally well policed, with some royal parks such as Greenwich with their own dedicated police force and station to cope with problems. Others are not, but London has more surveillance cameras per mile than anywhere else in the world, which is likely to reassure many.
Culture
London is also a city of contrasts, with green spaces complementing the concrete commuter jungle of the financial districts. Women travelers can therefore pick and choose between any of the capital's 32 boroughs for youth hostels in London and never be far from transport to Central London and a park or two.
London is also famed for its blend of different cultures, with many places, such as Covent Garden, Chinatown, Soho and Leicester Square within minutes of each other. For the budget traveler however, it’s worth being wary of the tourist traps of the center.
As with many great cities around the world, research is the key to a successful trip and London is by no means an exception. The city often has a range of bargain deals on tickets for singletons, which are worth looking out for, but there’s so much to see that it’s nigh on impossible to get through everything.
