A very important branch of science is pharmacology. Pharmacologists are scientists who develop and test new drugs and medicines to help prevent, cure and treat diseases. They are the ones who design, test and improve all the different drugs and medications we see on the shelves in supermarkets and pharmacies.

A very controversial aspect of the tasks of a pharmacologist is that they often test their products on animals in the laboratory in order to observe the affects before testing on humans. If there are any adverse affects, the pharmacologist will determine the cause and remove it before any further testing is carried out. While testing is often carried out on animals, it is also carried out on humans before it is made available to the public to ensure that the product is safe for consumption. Rigorous testing is always carried out to ensure that none of the components of the drug are harmful or toxic in their prescribed doses.

Pharmacologists usually work in a laboratory environment with all sorts of advanced tools and equipment. They predominantly do research in the lab on a day to day basis, which helps them to discover and develop new drugs and devise cures and treatments for the diseases which affect humans and animals. The academic life of a pharmacologist is a long and hard one. An undergraduate degree in an area of science or possibly mathematics is a good starting point for those wanting to break into the industry. Postgraduate study in pharmacology is then necessary, usually at the doctorate level, in order to become qualified and enter the workforce as a research pharmacologist.

For those wishing to specialise in clinical pharmacology, that is, testing products on humans, a medical degree is required in addition to the PhD in pharmacology. Rest assured, the person testing, designing and manufacturing the medications you buy on a regular basis are highly qualified professionals with years and years of academic and practical training and knowledge.

While requiring many, many years of studying and training, those who finally become employed as a pharmacologist get great satisfaction out of knowing that their discoveries are helping millions of people fight diseases and ailments every day.
