It is one of the staples of our working world that not only does the workforce receive a reasonable (in most cases) rate of pay that fairly reflects the work load that has been put into the task at hand, but also that compensation is approved when the workforce is asked to do something that sits outside the remit of the original contract of employment or the unspoken contract of social acceptability that sits outside of the workforce. It is with this is mind that for decades a worker of any stature would expect to receive in the pay packet a bonus for carrying out duties on a Sunday â€" something which is dying out with the reigning in of Sunday as a ‘special’ day when it comes to trade and industry. Likewise, bank holidays are compensated for, as are night shifts â€" a period of time specifically termed ‘unsociable hours’.

Unsociable hours traditionally can be defined as those hours of work when the majority are out of work, such as night shifts or weekend evenings â€" in fact, whenever it is the optimum time to be sociable. Falling into many of these categories must be the shift patterns of a bar person who works in a night club. Not only is this a time that is particularly unsociable to work, but it is also quite impossible to hide this from the employer, as everybody in front of him/her is doing their utmost to be as sociable as possible. It is strange then that this work is so undervalued that it procures minimum wage-level remuneration almost without exception across the UK, with no level of compensation for the inconveniences noted above.

It is perhaps telling that in this day and age of twenty four hour news, twenty four hour shopping, twenty four hour life, that the times traditionally marked as ‘inconvenient’ are now no longer regarded as so, and it is the workforce that supports the industry from the bottom up that, as usual, is forced to agree with this theory without consultation.
