The affectionately titled ‘Magic City’ of Miami is by far and away Florida's most exciting tourist haunt and one that has established itself as synonymous with late night entertainments and all-night partying.

Miami has a Latin American population that far outdoes that of any other US city, which is no surprise given its southern coastal location. With a city population of under half a million, its relatively small size ensures that the budget traveler's Miami hostel is never far from the nearest beach.

Cheap Accommodation

And in spite of their amazing beachside locations, your average Miami hostel is reassuringly cheap! Miami Beach International Travelers’ Hostel is great value at $16, while the prices at the lively Jazz on South Beach Hostel start at an amazingly low $15.

For those with a little more cash to splash, the Tropics Hostel gives you a bed close to all the major party spots from $22. The Clay Hostel, meanwhile, has been described as "the most beautiful hostel in America”, and at a shade over $20 a night, is hardly going to break the bank.

Nightlife

Miami's nightlife has absorbed the city's multicultural influences and offers travelers plenty of options to suit most tastes and preferences. Many of the city's nightclubs are connected to bars or restaurants, providing a host of choices of entertainment on any given evening.

However, although Miami allows travelers the opportunity to dance at just about every venue, exercising this right can end up becoming just a little costly. Testament to the city's party culture, there are a huge variety of pre-bookable tours available for those travelers unable to make up their minds about when and where to go, which can also end up working out cheaper than a self-styled route.

Festivals

Another holiday option is to time trips to coincide with some of the city's annual festivals and parties. A Miami hostel will be busier and occasionally more expensive, but the chance to party with the locals is an opportunity not to be missed.

In late February, the sophisticated – but far from sober! – South Beach Wine & Food Festival promises the chance to sample dishes from the city's multifaceted ethnic communities as well as exclusive access to the festival's many parties.

By contrast, the Afro-Cuban Dance Festival in high-summer is themed primarily around one of Miami's most prevalent immigrant cultures. But although exclusive in style, it is far from exclusive in attendance, with both indoor and outdoor events attracting locals and tourists alike.

There is also a thriving gay community in Miami - and plenty of festivals to boot. Particular highlights include the Winter Party, Winter Music Conference (taking place in March) and November's South Beach White Party that caters for the older gay community.
