The retail environment is a varied workplace. There are many challenges to overcome but the work can be rewarding if you have the skills that you need. The hours can be long and you are often on your feet all day, if you havent worked in this area before you may find the work hard. However, if you give it a chance you will find the job is incredibly varied and it is extremely enjoyable. If you have the right skills you will find that this is the job for you. There are lots of oppurtunities for advancement if you are willing to work hard.
Your people skills are extremely important. You will be speaking to customers every day, whether you are working around the store or on tills. You will have to be friendly and cheerful, inviting customers to come to you with any questions they might have. You have to be able to be approachable and able to start a conversation with customers. A smile is very important when you work in a customer facing environment, and you need to be able to have a chat with your customers easily.
You also have to be professional and smart. Your hygiene and appearance is very important when you work in a customer facing role as you will be dealing with customers directly. You need to look clean and smart, as you are the face of the company. You need to look smart, in keeping with the image of the company you work for. You will be expected to carry yourself well and behave professionally at all times.
