Working within public relations may be hard work. The hours will be long and the work difficult, however it will also be very enjoyable. You will need to have a great deal of flexibility, as your day can often change quickly. You will also need to have excellent problem solving skills, as you may often be approached with challenging tasks. Tensions can be high in this industry and you need to be able to handle this, not taking anything personally and being able to fix issues quickly. You may have a great deal of responsibility and you have to be able to handle this.
You need to have the ability to work alone, as a lot of the time you will be assigned tasks and you will be expected to finish them on your own. You have to have the ability to deal with your own clients, instilling faith in your abilities and making sure you complete tasks efficiently. You need to be able to prioritise your workload, making sure everything is completed to a high standard and to the satisfaction of your client. You will need to have a good relationship with your client so you can understand their needs well.
You will need to have very good communication skills to work well in this job. You will be talking to people every day, and you need to be able to hold a conversation with people you don't know. You also have to be able to maintain a calm and professional demeanor, instilling trust in your clients. This means you need to also be able to listen very well, taking down information you have been given and relaying it correctly. You will not be able to make any mistakes, and so you have to have excellent attention to detail. You will be required to do some form of public speaking, so you need to be able to convey information clearly and concisely.
