For the holidaymaker planning out their dream Tenerife trip, some things should be taken as a given: The sun, for example, will shine on its beautiful beaches day after glorious day. And if the beaches ever get tiring, there will be more than enough things to see and do, from great golf courses to diving and even whale-watching. But don't assume, though, that a holiday in Tenerife will be the same wherever you go.

Despite being a small island, Tenerife is made up of two distinct halves: down to the south of Tenerife, the scene is livelier; full of bars, nightclubs and young people having a great time, it's one of the world's most famous holiday party destinations. Up in the north, meanwhile, the scene is a slightly more tranquil one. Its main resort, Puerto de la Cruz, tends to be the part of Tenerife that couples, honeymooners and families head to for a more sedate Tenerife break.

And that's just one decision to make, too. Having opted to head for the more laidback north, there's the small matter of picking a hotel in Puerto de la Cruz. Given that there are literally dozens of fantastic places to choose from, here's a roundup of just a few that stand out as amongst the most attractive Tenerife accommodation options.

Gran Hotel El Tope

A fantastic pool area, wonderfully friendly staff and ample, beautifully clean rooms all await at the Gran Hotel El Tope. Although this all-round appeal would be unlikely to disappoint anyone, El Tope tends to be most popular with Spanish couples. Perhaps it's the excellent buffet that attracts them in such numbers on their viajes Tenerife (or Tenerife trips)... Anyway, one way another, El Tope is a top choice of hotel in Puerto de la Cruz.

Gran Hotel Turquesa Playa

The Gran Hotel Turquesa Playa is the Puerto de la Cruz hotel of choice for the more mature holidaymaker. It isn't hard to see why, either: while its exterior is not necessarily much to write home about, inside it's a very model of relaxation, elegance and luxury. And all at the right price, too. If you're looking for somewhere that's a quick stroll into town, but that's quiet and comes with all the desirable creature comforts, it's hard to beat the Turquesa Playa.

Semiramis Hotel

The Semiramis is to be found out to the east of Puerto de la Cruz, and is one of the more dramatically situated hotels in Tenerife. Its seventeen floors cling (precariously, it seems!) to a cliff edge high above the town, offering magnificent views out across the sparkling blue ocean. From its two swimming pools to a range of other facilities - like pool and darts - there are plenty of things to do in the hotel itself. From a change of scenery, however, the bars and restuarants of the town are just a stone's throw away.

Apartamentos Casablanca

As well as some of the most outstanding hotels in Tenerife, there are several Puerto de la Cruz apartments that make for an excellent place to stay. Apartamentos Casablanca is one such. Although it scores highly on most fronts, with its self-catering facilities, the complex is the obvious choice for holidaymakers with children. And amongst the many, many families who stay here, remarkably few leave disappointed.
