The thing about picking your summer holiday is that sometimes it’s hard to decide what to go for: city break or flop and drop beach holiday. Fortunately in Cuba you have the best of both worlds – Havana offers a superb city break, while Varadero is just mile after golden mile of idyllic white beaches.

But it’s not necessarily as simple as all that. For the truly perfect Caribbean trip (or viajes Caribe as they say in Spanish!), you need to find the right hotel. Once again, however, Cuba more than delivers; from Havana’s old palaces to the modern luxury of Varadero, there are more than enough great hotels in Cuba to choose from.

Starting off in Havana

Hotel Parque Central, Havana
The Hotel Parque Central is, without a doubt, one of the most attractively located hotels in Havana. Like most of the city’s hotels, it just drips with history and colonial elegance, and some rooms even come complete with stunning views of the nearby Capitol.

Hotel Saratoga, Havana
An impressive marriage of modern facilities and old world charm, the Hotel Saratoga is one of the most luxurious Havana hotels. The staff are absolutely fabulous, and after a sweltering day’s sightseeing you can slip into the rooftop pool and cool off!

Palacio O’Farrill Boutique , Havana
In the heart of Old Havana (just round the corner from the Cathedral) Palacio O’Farrill Boutique is packed with grand palatial touches that don’t come at the expense of a genuinely intimate experience. In the evenings you can sit out on the terrace and take in the views of the wonderfully atmospheric crumbling city that stretch away in every direction.

Moving on to Varadero

Hotel Iberostar, Varadero
After a few days pounding the streets of Havana, you’ll be looking forward to rolling out the beach towel and stretching out on the sand. Thankfully, the Iberostar offers just that… and plenty more besides. Fantastically varied facilities meet idle days doing absolutely nothing – what could be better?

Coralia Club Playa D'oro, Varadero
More of the same at this excellent (and quite reasonably priced) Varadero hotel. Where the Coralia Club excels, though, is in the high standard of its buffets, with seemingly endless portions of freshly fish on offer every night. All in all, it’s a seriously attractive package.

Hotel Paradisus Princesa Del Mar Resort & Spa, Varadero
One of the more luxurious hotels in Varadero, the Princesa del Mar is the ideal choice for honeymooners looking for a quiet, romantic break away from it all. There are a variety of cuisines to try across several restaurants, the rooms are extravagant, and everything is, well, practically perfect!
