1. Try Booking via Travel Auction
Believe it or not, some of the best deals for holidays to the Caribbean can be accessed through travel auctions. These days there are plenty of online travel auction options out there from household names like eBay and LuxuryLink to French site Nouvelles-frontieres or the subasta viajes held on Spanish site Logitravel.

Whoever you go for, it’s never a bad idea to check out the variety of offers that can be had. These range from flights or hotel only lots, to full packages or all-inclusive Cuba holidays. And with possible savings up to and including 100%, they can really be the making of a trip to Havana.

2. Head for a Havana Hotel
As befits a glorious old colonial city, Havana hotels tend to be grand atmospheric affairs. And this is certainly the case with the NH Parque Central. Stepping inside (from its wonderful central location), the lobby is a riot of tropical plants, while the facilities are uniformly excellent.

The Hotel Saratoga, meanwhile, has a rooftop terrace with fabulous views and a pool to escape the stifling Havana heat. Few things could be better than sitting on the terrace with a cold mojito and looking out over the heaving, sweltering mass of streets that stretch away in every direction.

3. Salsa!
Wherever you go in Havana you’ll be followed by the seductive rhythms of salsa music; the city just doesn’t stop humming and rattling with music and dance. To see some live action – or even better, get involved – forget the cabaret shows (that are expensive and overwhelmingly cheesy). Head instead for the bars and clubs that can be found dotted all over town, and are packed with real Cubans having a great time.

4. Learn a little Spanish
You can have a perfectly good time of it in Havana without speaking any Spanish. But to really get the most out of this remarkable city (and country), it can’t hurt to learn a bit of the language. What’s more, once you’ve started speaking Spanish, any number of other rewarding viajes Caribe (that’s Caribbean trips!) begin to open up in front of your eyes.

5. Watch the Sunset from the Malecon
The Malecon is quite simply one of the most iconic stretches of coastline to be found anywhere in the world. It’s a real hub of activity in Havana, and at any given time of the day or night people can be found taking a stroll along it, fishing or just hanging out and chatting.

After a long day’s sightseeing, though, it’s also the best place from which to go and watch the sunset. As the sun slips into the ocean, and the gorgeous old buildings that stare out to sea begin to be embraced by the gathering gloom, it’s a truly magnificent spectacle and a fitting end to a fabulous day.
