Gas Fitters are in charge of fitting and maintaining gas appliances and associated pipe work in domestic, commercial and industrial locations.

They deal with central heating systems, fires, cookers and boilers. Some also provide advice and sell additional products and services.

They can have a number of different titles, depending on their particular speciality or employers:
 Maintenance fitters, who handle the necessary maintenance and servicing required to ensure appliances are safe and working correctly. They also handle annual gas boiler safety inspections and repairs when needed, as well as helping customers gain the maximum efficiency of their appliances.
 Repair technicians, who locate and fix problems with appliances, fittings and pipe work with a mixture of fault diagnosis tools, knowledge and experience.
 Installation technicians, who fit and prepare appliances for customers. They also work with customers to design and plan central heating systems.

There is always a demand for Gas Fitters on construction and development projects taking place across the UK.

Gas Fitters’ working hours are usually around 37 " 40, from Monday to Friday, but extra hours for evening and weekend work will be worked as needed to ensure projects and work are finished to deadline. Work on some projects can also mean time away from home. The need to travel from site to site requires a driving licence.

The work can often entail climbing to work at height, or crawling into underground spaces. There is also much lifting, kneeling and bending, often in cold, damp and dirty conditions.

Typical annual salaries, for those starting as trainee or apprentice Gas Fitters tend to be around £13000. Those working on shift patterns will be paid extra for unsocial hours, and there may be travel expenses as well for those on call.

The usual paths to becoming a Gas Fitter is through apprenticeships and other trainee schemes. Good GCSE grades in English, maths and science are the entry qualifications. Once in training, new recruits will study towards BTEC, NCQ and City and Guilds qualifications.

Vacancies are advertised in specialist trade publications, newspapers and websites, and also by recruitment agencies.
