“It’s good to be in control” as the old saying goes, but before you can click those fingers, gas distribution workers need to bring you those vital supplies of fuel for cooking and heating.

GDW’s strive to keep supplies of gas flowing to millions of domestic and commercial premises throughout the UK. Working mostly in teams of two or three, they are responsible for laying, maintaining and replacing the over 45000 miles of gas pipeline across the UK.

They also connect customers’ homes and business’ up to the main distribution networks. An apprentice usually works with these teams to learn on the job as part of their three years of training.

Gas Distribution Workers work seven days a week, with extra hours worked as required to ensure essential work is finished to deadline. At times they can have to travel to other sites, so a full driving licence will be more than useful.

Gas Distribution Workers’ work takes place both outdoors and indoors on all sorts of sites at all sorts of times. When outdoors, they will be exposed to all weathers and conditions, and must wear all necessary safety clothing and footwear when on sites. Safety is, of course, vital, and some workers are solely responsible for the safety of those working on a site or project.

The work can involve climbing to work at heights, or crawling into underground spaces. There is also much lifting, kneeling and bending, often in cold, damp and dirty conditions. Their work can involve digging up roads, operating road drills, etc.

A usual way into the job is through apprenticeships and other trainee schemes, leading to degrees and equivalent level qualifications. Good GCSE grades in English, maths and science are the entry qualifications for new apprentices.

Typical annual starting salaries, for new Gas Distribution Workers are around £12000. Those working on shift patterns will be paid extra for unsocial hours.

Suitable vacancies for Gas Distribution Workers can be found with gas supply and distribution companies. Vacancies are usually advertised in specialist trade publications, newspapers and relevant websites, and also by recruitment agencies.
