Five Ways to an Amazing Gap YearCategory: Travel & Holidays Article added by: Paul Collins
The problem with gap year travel is that there are so many possible routes to go down.
So the key to is to really know what you want to get out of it. To help you really make the most of your gap year, then, here are five different options to consider.
1. Volunteer in Costa Rica
Volunteering is where responsible travel and gap year travel meet. Joining the throngs of volunteers overseas in Costa Rica is one of the best possible things to do with your year away.
It’s a no-brainer, really. You get to spend time helping people, immersed in another culture and seeing one of the most beautiful countries in the world. Plus, it looks great on your CV when you one day start looking for work!
2. Learn a Language in Germany
Like Nos. 1 and 5, the emphasis here is on a really fulfilling gap year. And taking time out to live in another country and learn another language certainly achieves that objective. Doing a lengthy German course in Berlin gives you unparalleled access to everything this fabulous city has to offer: museums, galleries, great shopping… and, of course, the legendary Berlin nightlife!
3. Take a Scuba Diving Course in Thailand
There are plenty of places to do a scuba diving course: Fiji, Egypt, Indonesia, the sun-kissed islands of the Caribbean... But not many of them can match Thailand’s Koh Samui for combining a simply dazzling underwater spectacle, with gorgeous beaches and bouncing nightlife in one action-packed gap year.
4. Do the Ultimate Road Trip in Australia
Few places seem to quite so tailor-made for a gap year as Australia. What’s more, with the annual influx of gappers from Europe looking to strike out into the country on a road trip, there are plenty of car dealers who can provide the wheels at the right price.
When it comes to choosing a road trip in Australia, it’s hard to know quite where to start. The country is vast, and almost indescribably beautiful. A good bet however, is the Stewart Highway – a 2,000 mile odyssey through the country’s barren heart.
5. Go Backpacking in Italy
Break the world down into continents, and there’s a danger that you can spread yourself too thinly on your gap year. By backpacking in Italy, and choosing just one country to focus your attentions on, you can really develop an understanding of its ins and outs.
And some ins and outs they are, too! Rome, Florence, Venice… It’s like a roll call of great backpacking destinations for a cultural gap year. Then, of course, there are the picturesque villages of Cinque Terre and the beaches of the sultry south.
Here again, you could mix in a bit of studying on your travels (or as they say in Italian viaggi studio!)… When it comes to choosing what to do on your gap year, it just doesn’t get any better than backpacking in Italy!
