Teaching is often portrayed as a poison chalice, especially in a politically wrong world where very soon teachers will not even be able to smile at pupils for fear of offending them. People have their own reasons for wanting to teach. Some feel that they can make a difference, others enjoy working with children and watching their education and abilities develop and there are those out there who are in it just for the holidays. But, without fear of derision, add to the list the lucrative salary.

The minimum pay rate for teachers in the U.K as of September 2009 is 21k. If you reside in the South East then this increases to 24k or in London then this rises again to 26k. This is an average increase of about £500-£600 from 2008 and there is every chance that this could go up again next year.

The above figures relate only to the first scale of qualified teaching. For the U.K on average, this can increase by as much as 2k per year as you progress through the teaching scales. So those that are at scale 2 can earn up to 22k, scale three can pay 24k, scale four 26k and so forth until you reach scale six which can provide a salary of just under 31k. From here are further progression opportunities that are performance based and could result in an even larger wage per year.

Potential earnings are even higher if you live in the South West of England and the surrounding areas. But if you’re lucky enough to live in London then the rewards are even higher. After progressing through the qualification scales to a level 6, you could be earning a salary of in excess of 35k a year. As long as you’re not working in Grange Hill then you should have no cause for complaints.

So, contrary to popular belief, the salary of a teacher is a healthy one. After all, who could turn down the opportunity for a salary like this and still get all the time off that school kids get?
