Domestic/ Cleaning – Salaries

Everyone knows the phrase “Somebody’s got to do it”. Whether its sewer maintenance, being a traffic warden or even dry cleaning John Prescott’s underpants, there will always be a job that people take for granted and leave for others to do. Cleaning and domestic duties fall into this category. The buildings we work in, the toilets we frequent and the houses we live in all require cleaning and for a supposedly menial task with no qualifications, the salary is higher than you might expect.

A cleaner’s salary can average up to 13k a year or 14-15k if you live in London or the South East depending on the amount of hours available to you. Of course it can depend on hourly rates with certain positions which is usually £6.50 an hour or thereabouts but it all adds up to more or less the same amount. This is on a par with an office worker’s wage for a less skilled job and no boss breathing down your neck wanting another cup of coffee.

And then of course, we have housekeepers. For the aspiring Mrs Hudsons in the world, the average salary for a housekeeper in the U.K is 16k. Again, it can depend on your situation but the salary is not inconsiderate for such an unskilled position. Live-in housekeepers can earn up to £350 a week in wages depending on the area and employer. Positions are usually available within hotels that require the upkeep of rooms and replenishment of amenities, or within care homes ensuring the cleanliness and hygiene for residents. Or “inmates” as the clients might refer to themselves.
Therefore, those that
sneer at such a vocation need not get too high and mighty about the domestic and cleaning sector when they consider the competitive salaries that are available. After all, we have all heard the phrase “Somebody’s got to do it”, haven’t we?
