In classical literature, the Tunisian island of Djerba was famous as the island of the Lotophagi or Lotus-eaters. And modern Djerba has changed very little since its distance (mythical) past: it’s still a place of great relaxation and hedonism for thousands of tourists on their Tunisia trips.

Hotels in Djerba

Although Djerba gets a higher percentage of Tunisian holidaymakers than many other resorts in Tunisia, the hotels in Djerba see their fair share of German and British holidaymakers, as well as plenty of Spanish tourists on their viajes Tunez.

But no matter where you’re from, it’s hard to argue with the fact that Djerba hotels are amongst the best in Tunisia. A couple of standout examples include the Melia Palm Azur and the Hasdrubar, while the Iberostar Djerba Beach remains understandably popular.

Things to do in Djerba

For those who can bear to rise from their sun beds for a moment, there are plenty of things to do in Djerba. Yes, there are the usual golf courses – Djerba Golf Club is a fine example of all the investment that’s gone into golf in Tunisia – but there’s also some local culture and history to digest.

With this in mind, the main town of Houmt Souq is a bustling, lively sort of place. With its crowded souks, and café-lined squares perfect for people-watching, the focal point, it’s a pleasant place to while away a day.

In terms of sightseeing, Djerba is also home to a couple of strikingly minimalistic mosques: Jama Tajdid, Jama Ghizen and the deserted Jama Fadloud. Set against the brilliant blue of the Tunisian sky, their plain white exteriors make for the most marvelous photo opportunities.

There’s also the fort of Borj el Kebir (or Borj Ghazi Mustapha) to explore. An imposing old Sicilian fort (built in the 12th century to guard against pirate raiding parties), its roots stretch back to Roman times. These days, it’s really just a great place to pace the ramparts and gaze out to sea.

Beaches in Djerba

But not many tourists come to Djerba solely for the sightseeing: it’s all about sun, sea and sand. And even fewer will be disappointed with what they find, as Djerba beaches are magnificent. To the north and east, the main Djerba hotels near Houmt Souk offer privileged access to one of the best strips of coast in the Mediterranean.

Elsewhere on the island, meanwhile, the spotless (and relatively quiet) sands and the warm blue waters of the Gulf of Gabes that can be found at Aghir and el Kantara easily put them up amongst the best beaches in Tunisia.

Ultimately, it’s the combination of great resorts, a surprising variety of things to see and do, and the unerringly fantastic beaches that make Djerba such a popular choice for a trip to Tunisia. And it’s this same combination that – much like the Lotus-eaters – makes it hard for tourists to tear themselves away!
