From gorgeous golf courses to beautiful beaches and handsome hotels, Tenerife has the sort of tourist infrastructure that most other places can only dream of. One of its finest assets, however, isn’t immediately obvious to most people, as it comes in the form of its excellent diving.

Although it may not quite have the reputation of the South Pacific or the Caribbean, the diving in Tenerife is some of the best that can be easily accessed from Europe. All along its volcanic shores, the coastline is dotted with fantastic dive sites, but here are six of the best off the south of the island.

1. Los Chuchos

Not far from the cliffs of Los Gigantes, and established by one of the Tenerife diving schools, Los Chuchos is one of the best places to go diving in Tenerife, and the secret’s very much in the name (‘Chucho’ means ray in Spanish). Few things are as compelling an underwater sight as the graceful – ghostly even – passing of a ray, and this Tenerife dive sites offers them in plentiful supplies.

2. Atlantis

The Tenerife dive site of Atlantis is like an underwater version of Ireland’s Giant’s Causeway, as huge hexagonal columns descend into the depths to spectacular effect. In addition to this impressive geological formation, divers are rewarded with a wide variety of colorful underwater flora and fauna.

3. Los Canones

Los Canones is one of the more advanced dive sites in Tenerife. When the conditions allow, divers get a privileged view of a huge canyon amongst a variety of other impressively dramatic scenery. And the scale of the landscape is matched by its inhabitants: Los Canones is one of the few dive sites in Tenerife where you can see both barracuda and even grouper.

4. El Condesito

El Condesito is one of the most popular wreck dives in Tenerife. The wreck itself has been there since the early 1970s, so a good deal of marine life has had time to make its home on and around it. Since it’s based in shallow waters, it’s a perfect site for everyone from novices to experts.

5. La Caleta

Just a short boat journey from the tourist hub of Playa de las Americas is the popular Tenerife dive site of the reef of La Caleta. It attracts all levels of divers because of the range of sea life (from rays to Roncadores) you see there, and the frequently strong currents that carry divers along with a bare minimum of effort.

6. Las Cuevitas

One of the most emblematic of Tenerife sights are the cliffs of Los Gigantes. So it comes as no surprise to find that in Las Cuevitas, they’re home to one of the best Tenerife dive sites for most levels of divers. Meaning ‘little caves’ in Spanish, Las Cuevitas are a series of pockmarks in the surface of the cliff face that are overflowing with fascinating sea life.
