Considered to be among the foremost surrealist painters in the world, Salvador Dalí is also a child of Catalonia and one of Spain’s pride and joys. Much of his life was spent in the home he shared with his immortalised wife, Gala, in the Costa Brava’s Portlligat, which he cultivated as a natural museum. To visit this idyllic part of the world and revel in Dalí’s alternative vision, Go2Spain have compiled examples of close-by accommodation out of the many cheap hotels in Spain they source.

To truly make the most of your trip it is best to spend several days at a hotel in the Costa Brava. This gives you a chance not only to wander around the house-museum with its breath-taking murals, weird and wonderful statues and phallic shaped pool, but also the Gala-Dali Castle in Púbol, which Dalí bought for his love Gala and moved to after her death in 1982. In addition there is the Dalí Theatre Museum in Figueres, the town of both his birth and final resting place, which contains the largest surrealistic object in the world.

For just £43 per person per night, including breakfast, a stay at the Sidorme Girona-Figueres is an ideal way to experience the magic of Dalí. Situated on the main road to Roses, this contemporary hotel is a short drive to Portlligat and just 3km from the centre of Figueres. Built in 2007, it has all mod cons and each room comes with air conditioning and wireless internet connection plus king-sized beds are available.

Just a stone’s throw from the theatre museum where the artist spent his last years, on Salavador Dalí Avenida is the Pirineos-Pelegri Hotel. Located in the centre of Figueres this establishment puts you at the heart of a thriving town with fabulous places to eat and drink and wind down after your excursions. With its own stylish a la carte and buffet restaurants and cosy bar however, you could chose to stay in and relax, ready for the next day’s viewing. Prices start at £63 per person per night bed and breakfast.

For a different experience, make one of the self-catering Hap-Dreams Hotel apartments in the old town of Girona your base. Steeped in the history of the area, the accommodation retains the character of the original building with a sensitive restoration which uses bare stone walls to maximum affect. Each room comes with an American kitchenette, double bedroom, lounge area with sofa bed, balcony or terrace and is cleaned daily. There is also a
superb garden to relax in and soak up the sun. It costs from £80 per person per night based on four people sharing.
