Window fitters, as the job title suggests, install windows and doors, and might additionally be asked to work on larger projects such as conservatories. No previous qualifications are necessary as most of the training is done on the job. However, many people choose to enter the profession from another job within the construction industry, such as carpentry, and any previous experience will greatly enhance your job prospects.

Window fitters are trained to work with different materials, from UPVC to more traditional wooden- or metal-framed windows. A typical job may include removing old windows and calculating the size of the window space. Some windows may need to be cut to size, whilst others will require a bigger space for the window. Fitters then install the window, ensuring that it is safely in place.

As mentioned previously, there are no set requirements before starting training, however some GCSEs are useful, especially maths and subjects such as design and technology. Numerical skills are good to have, as the job often involves measuring the space and the window, and this must be done accurately the first time. For those working in this industry, especially those working on a contract basis, a high-quality job can help ensure that more work comes their way. In the same way, a careless job can ruin a reputation and a career. To succeed in the industry, window fitters must have good manual skills and the patience and care to provide a good service.

Of course, most of these skills can be taught through training. The majority of trainees choose to do so through gaining employment with a glazing company and training on the job with their employer. Apprenticeships are also available. Employer-based training leads to an NVQ level 2 or 3 in Fenestration Installation, covering topics such as health and safety, taking measurements and installing window units. An NVQ level 2 or 3 is also available in Glazing Installation and maintenance.

As well as these skills, window fitters should also be physically fit and have the ability to work on their feet, outdoors and also at heights for a long time. Trainees typically start at a salary of around £12,000 a year, with the potential to progress to earning around £16,500 a year once they are qualified. Moreover, with additional experience and responsibilities, window fitters can earn up to £20,000 a year.
