Construction – plumbing…Category: Business Article posted by: Jon Richards
Plumbers work with the water and drainage systems of buildings. They install and repair and are employed to work in many different buildings, from small homes to large commercial and industrial buildings, and also outdoors. Within homes they will install domestic heating systems, in commercial buildings they may be employed to install and maintain air conditioning or extraction systems. Outdoors, plumbers work on fixing gutters or waterproofing roofs, and may also work with sanitation and waste disposal systems. It is a highly varied job and a very popular career choice for those within the construction industry.
Due to the wide-ranging skills a plumber needs to know, it can take years of training before being fully-qualified. Training involves learning how to work with different materials such as copper, lead, iron and plastics. They need to learn how to work with pipes, how to bend, join and fix them, and also how to use different tools. On small jobs plumbers may also need to know how to design plumbing systems. Trainees will learn about central heating, sanitation and hot and cold water systems, as well as health and safety.
To begin training it is usually required that you have at least 3 GCSEs, preferably in Maths, English and Science. When starting off in the industry, trainees must gain a City and Guilds level 2 certificate in basic plumbing, before working towards a level 3 plumbing studies certificate. This qualification will give trainees the basics in theory and provide them with necessary skills and knowledge that enable them to start working for an NVQ in plumbing. Those already working in the industry can go straight to getting an NVQ by working with a plumbing firm and training on the job with an employer. Some can choose to go further and gain an NVQ level 4 or 5 in a related subject such as wielding.
To work as a plumber it is imperative that you are able to follow building plans and drawings and work accurately. The job also requires someone who is fit, and who works carefully and safely. Teamwork is also an important part of the job, and plumbers should be able to work well with their co-workers and be able to deal well with customers. Though it may take years to qualify, qualified plumbers can earn over £18,000 a year, and experienced plumbers can typically earn over £22,000 a year.
