Education and Childcare Inspectors are tasked with making sure all children are in receipt of high standards of care and education at all times.

They visit schools, colleges, community education centres, and every place offering care and educational facilities including (such as childminders and children's social care) where they will observe operational activities, determine the level of standards and then reporting accordingly.

An inspector’s usual tasks and day to day activities include:
 Studying previous reports.
 Preparing for inspections.
 Inspecting child care providers and making sure their operations comply with all official and legal standards.
 Registering providers of child care.
 Checking plans for lessons and sitting in on classes to make observations.
 Checking pupils' work.
 Checking equipment and facilities.
 Evaluating child care provision.
 Producing clearly written and concise reports.
 Providing feedback.
 Carry out fact finding by meeting and talking to those with responsibility for children.
 Meeting fellow inspectors to discuss findings and make further assessments and comparisons with national standards.

Particular attention is given to places that have subjects of complaint or concern with regard to standards.

Inspectors in England are usually employed by the The Office for Standards in Education, Children's Services and Skills, known as OFSTED. While in Wales, they work for the office of Her Majesty's Inspectorate for Education and Training in Wales (Estyn).

There are also Her Majesty's Inspectors (HMIs) who are civil servants employed by Ofsted (in England) or Estyn (in Wales).

Inspectors’ usually work around 38 hours per week (Monday to Friday). Extra will be worked as needed to, when carrying out inspection.

Inspector’s salaries begin from £21000 per annum with those of Her Majesty’s Inspectors starting at £47000 (approx) per year.

Qualifications needed:
Inspectors are required to possess the following:
 A relevant professional qualification, such as a degree.
 At least five years recent teaching experience.
 Up to date education and training knowledge.
All applicants will be subject to a Criminal Records Bureau check before taking up a post as an inspector.

Vacancies are normally advertised in January by Ofsted in The Times Educational Supplement.
