Austrian cooking really has a lot to offer: the world-famous 'Kaiserschmarrn' (shredded pancake with sugar and raisins), savoury or sweet 'Palatschinken' (rolled-up filled pancakes), the original 'Sachertorte' (rich chocolate cake with apricot jam under the chocolate icing), or the 'Gugelhupf' stirred cake with its crown of icing sugar. But if you want to experience the 'tasty side' of the Alpine country, you should not confine yourself to the most well-known of its delicacies. Deep in Pinzgau – where tradition is still very much a thing of the present – a very special treasure for the friends of good cooking is hidden. Take: the best of the milk, a decent portion of joie de vivre, and of course, lots of time. The result will be soft and incredibly creamy – as gourmets from all over the world will be able to find out for themselves at the week-long Cheese Festival in Kaprun.
From 18th to 24th September the holey dairy product will be at the centre of everyone's attention in the 'Europa-Sportregion Zell am See-Kaprun'. Every day will bring a new event under the sign of cheese – hard cheese, curd cheese, cheese spread. And there is good reason for that: probably no other delicacy is as popular even beyond the borders of the region as is the original Pinzgau cheese. Regretfully, visitors will not be told the secret of its success during the festival either. But of course, they will be allowed to enjoy it with all their senses!
A huge 90-kilogram Emmental will be available for tasting at Kaprun Castle. 'Would you like a slice of cheese?' visitors will be asked when the giant cheese is ceremonially cut up in that
stylish setting to the sound of lots of music. The cheese market in the village centre also offers plenty of culinary delights. Here, you can regale yourself on the full range of cheeses and also enjoy the traditional parade afterwards. A herb walk at 'Mooserboden' or a visit to the 'Aubauer' farm in Zell am See also lead visitors back to the roots of the natural product of Pinzgau. Here you can see the production of butter and cheese happen right in front of your own eyes – and of course there will also be some samples for you to taste.
As the way to people's hearts is not just through their stomachs, the cheese festival also offers some attractions for their eyes and ears. Special seminars in the restaurants and hotels of Kaprun give an almost scientific insight into the tradition and production of Pinzgau's most popular dairy product. A group called 'Roland Neuwirth & seine Extremschrammeln' are out to sweeten the evening with their concert called 'Eigschenkt und Weinstanzln' – a musical excursion on the trails of the red and the white wine. During another evening event at Kaprun Castle a very special quintet is set to prove that cheese is an ideal topic to philosophize on. It is no accident that the title of their programme is 'Alles Käse'. In German 'Käse' is the word for 'cheese' as well as a colloquial expression for talking 'rubbish'...
