Everyone should have to do at least one good deed a day. Whether it’s holding a door open for a Mother and pram or pledging money to people in unpronounceable countries, doing a good deed makes one feel warm inside. The voluntary sector gives you the opportunity to encourage others to do good deeds for those less privileged. Although its name implies that people give up their spare time to bring this about out of the goodness of their heart, they don’t do it for free as everyone has bills to pay.
Criticism has been levelled at the executives of charity organisations for earning in the region of six-figure salaries which somewhat defeats the overall object of charity in the first place. Some charity bosses award themselves a bigger wage than the Prime Minister. But if your heart is in the right place and you decide that the voluntary sector is for you, then becoming a fundraiser at street level can pay in the region of £7 an hour with some charities paying extra for any expenses incurred.
There are senior positions available that can pay an honest salary in the region of 19-24k a year for graduates in the London area. Positions relating to management or as a Director can far exceed this figure and can reach between 45-60k but, unsurprisingly, this depends upon the size and location of the charity. Of course, there are many other positions available for people within a charity organisation such as administrators which can pay 18k, event and corporate fundraising which can exceed 21k as well as press and information managers that have the potential to earn up to 25k a year.
Whether your intentions are to do some good in the world or at least help others to do so, the charity sector can help you bring this about whilst still being able to offer you a comfortable living wage. And it’s always a pleasant sensation to have a warm feeling inside, especially in this cold weather.
