Working in a call centre seems to be the one business environment that will never be endangered by a global financial meltdown, alongside debt collectors and bailiffs. Business deals will always be done via the telephone and will continue to do so, unless companies start using text messages which wouldn’t be very practical.
Starting as a humble incoming call agent, there is the potential to earn up to 16-17k a year provided you live in the South West of England as, inevitably, this is where the best paid jobs originate. At the other end of the pay spectrum is Northern Ireland which averages 13k which is less of a gap than in a lot of other industries.
Moving up in the world to the position of Team Leader, the national average is 20k. Or 26k if again, you happen to live in the South East of England. This time, there is more of a gap between the highest paying region and the lowest with Scottish Team Leaders only expected to earn in the region of 18k with fellow northern regions faring little better. Who said leading from the front was ever easy?
Call centre supervisors can be expected to earn around 24k unless, and absolutely no prizes for guessing, you happen to live in the South East of England where salaries reach up to 31k. Conversely, those working in the West Midlands will expect to earn about 22k. This gap isn’t as bad when you consider that there is a gap of 4k between the South East and its closest rival, Scotland, which comes in around 27k. You can start to see why Bannockburn was fought now can’t you?
Bucking the trend is the post of Call Centre Manager where the South West provides a salary of 44k. However, there is a major gap between here and Northern Ireland which will only pay 26k making a national average of 55k. This chasm between the two regions is comparable with that of being a Director of Operations where in the South East/London area you can expect to earn 59k a year whereas in Wales you can only expect 43k.
No-one said life was fair, but it’s still fair to say that you can earn a tidy salary in the call centre business wherever you are in the U.K.
