Berlin on the Cheap: How to Save Money When Studying in BerlinCategory: Travel & Holidays Article added by: Paul Collins
Capital cities aren’t exactly known for being the cheapest places in which to study. But with its affordable rental prices, free entry to museums and galleries and acres of pleasant parks, for a student looking to save money, Berlin is almost too good to be true.
Affordable Sightseeing in Berlin
The first thing that anyone on a German course in Berlin who’s looking to do a bit of sightseeing in Berlin should take note of, is that every Thursday evening, entrance to the city’s state-owned museums and galleries is free. Since there are a variety to be covered and plenty to see when you get inside, this can become a very agreeable weekly money-saving routine.
While it’s not exactly a ‘gallery’ in the strictest sense of the word, the East Side Gallery is a 1.3km stretch of the Berlin Wall that doubles up as a sort of open-air art display. The works include striking graffiti, murals and motifs of freedom, and, naturally, it’s absolutely free to stroll up and down, taking it all in.
Cheap Berlin Neighborhoods
Although there are any number of inviting Berlin neighborhoods, the best place for a student on their German course in Berlin to live is the district of Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg. Out to the southeast of the city center, it’s a scruffy, bohemian sort of place where the nightlife’s great and the rents are, for the most part, affordable.
But where Kreuzberg in particular comes into its own is in the abundance of places that serve that student dietary staple: the kebab. With its large Turkish population the area has countless cheap eateries (known as ‘imbiss’) to explore, and if that begins to tire after a while there are any number of similarly cheap fast-food options in Berlin (not least of which the mighty currywurst!) to try.
Park Life!
One of the best things about Berlin is the number of green spaces that dot the city. And whether it’s Kreuzberg’s Viktoria Park, the Pfaueninsel, or the enormous Tiergarten, there’s nothing like a day in the park for a free day out.
Berlin Nightlife that Doesn’t Cost a Fortune
Given the reputation Berlin nightlife has for being arguably the best in Europe, you might have thought that prices would be pretty steep. But that’s not really the case. As long as you steer clear of some of the swankier places to the west of the city, nightlife in Berlin is surprisingly affordable.
As with most things in Berlin, at the moment, East if very definitely best. Whether it’s the chic scene in Mitte and Prenzlauer Berg, or the grungier, alternative scenes of Friedrichshain and Kreuzberg, it’s the cracking nightlife scene that doesn’t cost a fortune that really stands out for the poor student.
