Albanian (Alb. shqipja) belongs to the Indo-European language family. Even though the language only became documented in the 15th century, it is a very old language which forms its own distinct branch within the Indo-European language family. Albanian is the mother tongue of about seven million speakers who live in the contiguous Albanian-speaking area in the Republic of Albania, in Kosovo, in South Serbia, in southern Montenegro, in Northwest FYROM and in Northwest Greece (in the Ēamėria-region).

Apart from this speaking area Albanian is also spoken in many language enclaves in South Italy (Apulia, Calabria, Sicily etc.) and in South Greece (on some Aegean islands and near Athens), in Bulgaria (Mandritsa), in Ukraine (Zaporija region) and in Croatia (Zadar), as well as by many Albanian emigrants in Turkey, the United States, Australia, Greece, Italy, the United Kingdom, Germany, Switzerland, etc.

All in all Albanian is spoken today by about ten million people worldwide.

The Albanian-speaking area is divided in two dialect areas: Gheg in the north and Tosk in the south. The Shkumbin River that flows through Central Albania from East to West forms the natural border between the two dialect areas.

The Gheg dialect is spoken in Northern Albania, Kosovo, Southern Serbia, Montenegro and in some parts of FYROM.

The Tosk dialect is spoken in Southern Albania, in some parts of FYROM and in Northern Greece (in the Ēamėria-region).

Both Albanian dialects do not differ much from each other. The differences between Gheg and Tosk concern mainly the phonetic system and less the grammatical structure and are not to be found equal all over the dialect areas.
