Air Cabin Crew are responsible for looking after passengers and ensuring they have a comfortable flight.

They are the passengers’ direct point of contact. They provide help, provide flight briefings and give security information.

Their usual tasks and activities include:
 Ensuring the aircraft is clean and tidy.
 Checking sufficient levels of food and drink are aboard.
 Ensuring all cabin equipment and medical supplies are in order.
 Supervising the boarding and disembarking of passengers.
 Ensuring passengers' hand luggage is safely stored in the appropriate places.
 Ensuring all passengers are wearing seat belts and complying with safety instructions.
 Serving food and refreshments.
 Selling gifts or duty-free items.
 Being in contact with the flight crew during the flight.
 Issuing warnings about turbulence.
 Administering first aid when needed.
 Handling passengers who are drunk or not fit to be aboard the flight for other reasons.
 Being alert for suspicious looking items and immediately reporting anything unusual to the captain.
 Reporting problems or malfunctions with equipment to line managers.

Air Cabin Crews must be of smart appearance at all times. Excellent standards of personal hygiene are vital.

Most Air Cabin Crews are employed by all airlines and flight operators. Applicants are expected to have GCSE level qualifications and a good overall standard of literacy and numeracy. Employers will usually provide any necessary training.

Air travel is a 24/7 operation, so Air Cabin Crews work various hours, set by a rota. They can be on night flights and/or work bank holidays, nights and weekends.

Some air hostesses work only on short haul flights, i.e. internal UK flights or trips to continental destinations, while others are away on longer distance flights to places like Australia, Asia and South America.

Initial salaries for Air Cabin Crew start at around £12000 per year.

Air Cabin Crews normally live within short travelling distance of their workplace, and ideally will drive or have access to frequent public transport.

Suitable vacancies are advertised in Flight International and other trade journals, various company websites, and national press.
