A Tenerife Trip: So Much More than Just Beaches!

Ask most holiday-makers what it is that first springs to mind when a Tenerife trip is mentioned, and they’d almost certainly cite its fantastic beaches. But the fact of the matter is that a trip to Tenerife is about so much more than just its sensational strips of sand.

Defined by Variety

Whether it’s the contrast between its lively tourist resorts and its quiet towns and villages, the incredible diversity of its landscape, or indeed, the beaches themselves (which vary enormously across the island), Tenerife is defined by its variety.

Towns

When it comes to towns in Tenerife, obviously there are the large, bustling resort towns of the south of the island. But there’s also another island; an island of remote hilltop towns like Masca, fishing villages like Garachico and the striking UNESCO protected city of La Laguna.

Things to do

Although the island’s greatest strength is perhaps the opportunity it presents to do absolutely nothing, there are plenty of ways to fill your time on a Tenerife trip. Up in the northern resort of Puerto de la Cruz is the island’s excellent zoo, Loro Parque.

A little to the southwest of the capital, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, meanwhile, there’s an altogether different sort of attraction. The origins of the Guimar Pyramids (striking pyramids made of volcanic rock) are shrouded in mystery. Of one thing, though, there’s little doubt: they are truly fascinating.

Landscapes

Right across the island, Tenerife is uniformly stunning. And in many ways this is where its variety most applies. Most people are obviously aware of the stunning lunar landscapes that stretch across the interior, but to the north there are also verdant forests to explore and the great hiking of La Orotava valley.

The Coastline

One of the more remarkable features of the Tenerife coastline can be found out to the west in the huge, looming cliffs of Los Gigantes. Best viewed from out at sea on a boat trip, they make for a simply awe-inspiring spectacle.

But if you ask the many Spaniards who make the island their holiday destination of choice, what it is that keeps them coming back on their viajes Tenerife (or Tenerife trips) and they’ll tell you in no time at all: year-round sunshine and wonderful beaches. After all, what could possibly beat slipping away from the office for a couple of weeks of winter sunshine?
