Tired of sightseeing? Looking for something to liven up your travels? More often than not, the key to getting just that little bit more from a trip is really only a question of using your imagination and digging a little deeper.

For something a bit different, here are four time-honored travel destinations – but with a twist!

Ecotourism in Tenerife

With its wonderful year-round climate, Tenerife has been a bastion of tourism for longer than almost anywhere else. Inland, away from the beaches and the flash hotels, though, Tenerife offers a whole range of attractions for the ecotourist.

And when it comes to Tenerife ecotourism, you don’t have to look too much further than the magnificent Teide National Park. Here, in one of the most remarkable landscapes in the world, you can expect to see a wide range of flora like the Canary Island Pine, the Teide White Broom and the Teide Violet – the highest flowering plant in Spain.

The bird-watching in Tenerife is similarly fantastic, with plenty of opportunities to catch sight of species like the Hoopoe, the Tenerife Kinglet, the Blue Chaffinch, and birds of prey like the Barbary Falcon and Kestrel, along with, of course, the Canary

Learn to Cook in Venice

There’s nowhere in the world like Venice. But sometimes even here, it can seem like you’re missing something, and that travel should be about more than just what’s on the surface. A good antidote to this feeling, then, is to take a cookery course in Venice.

The process is much the same as normal: you stay in a hotel in Venice, but during the days, rather than traipsing round the sights, you hit the kitchen. The cuisine of the Veneto is outstanding, and on a Venice cookery course you’ll learn to cook such simple culinary masterpieces as ‘pasta e fabioli’, ‘risi e bisi’ and Venetian risotto.

Follow the Football in Buenos Aires

Buenos Aires is a city that demands time. As such, the only way to really get the most out of a trip is to plan a lengthy stay in the city by picking out one of any number of central Buenos Aires apartments, and, ultimately, trying to ‘go local’.

And there’s no better way to get under the skin of the city than by throwing yourself whole-heartedly into the football. Football is a religion in Argentina, and no one’s more worshipped than Buenos Aires’ two rival teams, Boca Juniors and River Plate. Whether it’s live at the ground, or just on TV in a bar, football is the key to understanding the city.

See another Side of the Costa del Sol

Ask most travelers what their impressions of Malaga are, and it’s highly likely that they won’t even be able to describe anything outside of the airport. Which is a crying shame, really, because Malaga is a fantastic city that’s a million miles away from the resort towns that line the rest of the Costa del Sol.

As well as a wonderfully atmospheric Old Town, it’s got a dramatic Moorish fortress in the Alcazaba, the excellent Museo Picasso and great shopping on Calle Larios as some of the best nightlife around. So the next time you’re thinking of going to the Costa del Sol, why not do it a little differently, and give Malaga a try?
