A Cinema Fan’s Europe Travel GuideCategory: Travel & Holidays Article added by: Amanda diaz
Film festivals are events that garner high-profile media attention as travelers rub shoulders with the film industry glitterati from around the globe. Europe is host to some of the world's best film festivals, which also offer an opportunity to explore the cities too.
Berlin Film Festival
Also called Berlinale, this festival of new and independent cinema is widely held to have the world's largest attendance, so budget travelers should leave plenty of time to book hostels in Berlin . Having been established in 1951, it’s had plenty of time to establish itself and develop its selective entry process separating the proverbial wheat from the chaff.
Some of Berlin's most prestigious cinemas serve as the venue for the event, including the Cinema Arsenal hosting the International Forum of New Cinema, and the Berlinale Palast, which is actually a theater under ordinary circumstances.
Edinburgh Film Festival
It may be dwarfed by the size of Berlin, but the Edinburgh Film Festival is the ancient patriarch of film festivals as the longest running Film Society in the world. Originally only intended for documentaries at its launch in 1947, it now features films, shorts, animations and music videos to boot.
The festival also ensures that screenings are all at least UK premieres, if not European or International ones, which adds to the event's exclusivity. Scotland's capital has plenty of accommodation to suit all types of travelers, so whether it’s a great value Edinburgh hostel or a cheap hotel travelers are looking for, there’s lots of choice.
Venues include the Filmhouse, Foutnainpark Cineworld and Dominion cinemas, with more than ten categories of films on show including an audience choice award.
Barcelona Film Festival
Spain's hugely popular tourist haunt of Barcelona boasts three separate film festivals each providing a different theme for its visitors.
The Independent Film Festival also showcases features, animations and documentaries and is the youngest of this tripartite selection. There are also workshops and a meeting place for audiences, directors and actors to share ideas and analyses. It also only features alternative and experimental content.
The Barcelona Erotic Film Festival promises to give couples some things to consider when they bed down in their hostels in Barcelona for the night. Although a niche market, it still manages to attract attendees the world over to enjoy winners of three categories for heterosexual, gay and fetish films.
Not to be confused, the Barcelona Gay and Lesbian Film Festival was originally launched out of a frustration over the lack of non-commercial format film opportunities. The event also features in the cities of Lleida, Girona and Tarragona, and is, by turns, outrageous, moving and an awful lot of fun!
